Today’s trend is all about influencer marketing.
Uncles, Aunties, Nephews and Brothers everybody is catching up with the trend.
Don’t believe me, go check your Instagram feed. (Not now, later)
But we often fall into the false notions of what it means to influence.
We think it is the number of followers, likes and comments.
Nope.
Studies suggest influencers with less than 100k followers have more than 7% engagement rate.
It is less for the people with followers above 100k — 1.7%
There is the rise of micro-influencers and their influence in the influencer landscape.
It’s good news!
It is not about how many people you have reached, but how many people you have engaged with. Influence.
There are accounts on social media that might have millions of followers but nobody really knows who the person is.
Such accounts are mostly with faceless content about nature, viral videos etc.
I won’t put my money on them.
I rather prefer a person with whom I can engage in a meaningful way regardless of what numbers have to say.
And there is a way of doing it right.
Break the fourth wall.
Post your work on social media.
Be direct and speak from the heart.
You will never be ready, and you don’t need to be.
Stop seeking validation and say what you want to say with clarity.
At the end of the day, people who love you will not come to approve you but to connect.
The goal is not to produce a masterpiece but to have social proof.
Studies have shown that 70% of consumers trust online peer reviews and recommendations more than professionally written content.
Influence is intact with persuasion.
Facts are the only proven way of effective persuasion.
You cannot go wrong with the fact.
Moreover, they are interesting. People love to read facts they are unaware of.
Why waste time on opinions?
Research shows that people tend to reciprocate the request if you provide value induced by facts.
Next time if you want to persuade someone, even if it is your mother, state some facts.
My grandmother used to tell me horror stories.
I still remember some of them.
My grandmother was an influencer.
Storytelling can be an amazing extension of the facts.
Facts woven in stories can make your message 22 times more memorable (According to research by Forbes.)
Our brain is wired to pay attention to the stories.
It releases oxytocin in our brains. It is good for us.
It was an important aspect of human evolution when we used to gather around the fire and share stories.
It strengthens the bonds, enhancing trust and empathy.
People don’t care about what degrees you have and which college you went to.
They care about what knowledge you can provide.
Your formal title might land you a good job, but your knowledge can make you a good influencer.
A person providing knowledge is perceived as an authoritative figure.
Said so, it is also an opportunity to sharpen your own tools.
On average people only retain 25–50% of what they hear.
You can retain more than that with active listening.
Moreover, you can paraphrase and reflect on what’s being said.
It will significantly increase the retention and influence of your message.
Listen to what your audience is saying.
If you don’t have a large amount of audience right now, go to the places where they hang out.
