Social media influencers are stereotyped as Gen Z and millennials who have no interest in serving society through hard work and skills. All they would rather do is post pictures all day and make money without having to clock into a job and work hard like “normal people”. It would be a false statement to say people like that don’t exist. Many people would spend their whole day on the web. However, those who stereotype Social Media influencers don’t even know half of what a social media influencer’s job entails. Like any other non-conventional career choice, social media influencing is not an easy task; it takes hard work, skill, and being able to be creative in ways that contribute to the audience they’re connected to. Social media influencers are not useless in society; they help shape the minds of listeners by emotionally connecting with them and being a regular part of their lives. They economically benefit society through advertising and selling their sponsors’ products. Social media influencers also positively impact how viewers feel and having positive habits shown through their social media posts helps create routines for the viewers and thus slowly make people healthier, and more confident in their beliefs and body image. It is easy to have a negative connotation when thinking about a career path that seems “superficial” but when realizing that social media influencing isn’t always about aesthetics or “looking good” instead but making an impact on their community and uplifting people it is easier to see the job for what it is.

The notion that social media influencing is easy is completely false and is usually why many young people think they want to be influencers until they see the hard work that goes into it. Whether you are a big influencer or on a smaller scale it takes dedication and patience to pull this career off. It is easier said than done but many times it takes years to build a platform and even if the person is lucky and can find their audience consistently posting content will keep that person relevant. On top of having to compete with other emerging influencers, I must note that many influencers experience the pressure to perform their best all the time, for example, an influencer may have gotten a viral video or a substantial amount of like on a post. This can result in them feeling the need to compete with themselves and top what they did before. Influencers also experience having to be their boss, meaning organizing deadlines for content, creating content, editing, and when to post. This is a job that requires attention 24/7 because even if you are not posting it’s best to stay engaged with your viewers just to keep the connection between the viewer and influencer healthy and to stay relevant.

There is most definitely money in this industry contrary to what people may think whether you can’t wrap your mind around influencing being a real job or not numbers don’t lie and “The industry continues to grow at startling rates (it was recently valued at around $16.5 billion) and greatly affects the way information, goods, and services are conceived of, marketed, and sold. Influencers’ work has become critical to the commercial sphere and in shaping public discourse” This is just another example of why you shouldn’t doubt the emerging job to become an influencer, not only will this industry continue to grow it will most definitely continue. Consumers trust influencers more than ads you would see on tv.

Social media influencing is a job that someone should take on if they want to have creative control over things they create and have the freedom to create content they like and build a community around that. Influencing is a job that I can’t see going extinct simply because of the power the job has, it is now being used as a marketing tactic to keep consumers interested in brands and the industry is eager for new influencers every day. If only people seen influencing as a way to help elevate their existing brand or to create a new one I believe it would be more accepted as a career than a hobby.
